Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the popular series coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
