Thunder Launch Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Triumph
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the game-winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defence," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going onโshots, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, the team's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were presented with their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on this Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
