Polish forces Activates Jets as Russian forces Attacks Western Ukraine
Russia targeted Ukrainian territory with aerial assaults overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, concentrating on the major western city of Lviv.
Ukraine's neighbour Poland deployed fighter jets to guarantee the safety of Polish airspace, the Polish military announced. NATO partner planes were similarly activated.
Regional governor local authorities confirmed two people were fatally injured in strikes in the region, and an additional two wounded.
In other developments, Russian forces once more struck energy infrastructure - and one was struck in an overnight attack on Zaporizhzhia region, where the mayor reported an individual lost their life and more than 73,000 people were without electricity.
Military Response
The Russian assaults came days after a US official said the US would endorse Ukrainian forces conducting long-range attacks inside Russian territory.
"Polish and allied aircraft are active in our airspace, while land-based anti-aircraft systems and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness," military officials announced.
At early morning, all of Ukraine was under air raid alerts following air defense warnings of incoming aerial threats.
Energy System Attacks
Russian military has intensified its assaults against Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Lviv's mayor local officials said several districts - 43 miles from the Polish frontier - had lost electricity, adding that the local anti-aircraft units were actively involved in repelling first a UAV and then a missile strike.
As of morning hours, multiple areas were experiencing outages and public transport was yet to start running, with Sadovyi stressing that it was "dangerous to venture outdoors".
In Zaporizhzhia, the nocturnal assault left "over seventy-three thousand users... without power", according to regional officials.
An individual was killed, and nine injured, Fedorov confirmed.
A 16-year-old girl was among those receiving medical assistance, he added, posting photos apparently showing a partly destroyed multi-storey block and a destroyed vehicle from the site of the attack.
Regional Impact
Public transport in another western city, would "start running later than usual" on Sunday, its city administration announced.
The series of attacks were part of Moscow's offensive against the entire nation during the night.
At around early morning, Ukrainian defense officials warned the entire territory was facing danger of new missile strikes, following prolonged alert periods and notifications of aerial assaults.
Occupied Regions
Moscow's troops have taken control of most of the Donbas area, including key eastern cities.
Russia currently controls around a fifth of Ukraine's land, including the Crimean peninsula, which it seized in 2014.
Global Developments
In Russia, anti-aircraft systems destroyed multiple UAVs during the night, media outlets reported on Sunday.
Last week, a American diplomat indicated that the US would back Ukrainian forces launching deep strikes within Russia.
Meanwhile, another Nato member - the Baltic nation - had to suspend flights briefly after objects were spotted.
Authorities suspended flights at its main international airport for multiple hours, before reopening it at 04:50 on Sunday.
The airport's operator stated the flight suspensions and reroutings were "because of a possible series of aerial objects approaching Vilnius Airport".
