NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
