Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza experienced some of the most intense internal clashes since the conflict started, between Hamas security personnel against gunmen from the al-Mujaida family - one of the largest families in the southern region.

Per Hamas officials, its security personnel carried out an operation in the neighborhood to apprehend people accused of cooperating with Israeli authorities.

However, eyewitness reports described an attack by around fifty armed individuals riding in multiple vehicles, armed with automatic weapons and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, who entered forcefully the al-Mujaida quarter and eliminated five individuals from the family.

Armed relatives rapidly responded, initiating extended confrontations with sustained gunfire.

Accounts shared via social media – hard to authenticate – claim that at least 11 Hamas fighters were killed, with multiple remains supposedly paraded in the public areas.

Videos broadly distributed online, without independent verification, seem to depict multiple bloodied casualties in military fatigues, along with a narration stating they belonged to Hamas's "military division".

Another clip captured bursts of gunfire and a rocket-propelled grenade impacting a housing structure in the district.

Tribal mediators eventually mediated to mediate among the two sides, resulting in an handover of casualties designed to contain the deterioration.

Although the underlying causes are still uncertain, the clash has intensified anxiety among local population.

Numerous residents fear that widespread weapons, hostilities between influential clans and Hamas's grip on power could develop into scenes resembling domestic warfare in a territory already affected by population movement, destruction, and anxiety of increased chaos.

Analysts propose that the extent of anger which Hamas encounters from its various rivals – whom it has humiliated during its 17 years rule – is believed to be a major element motivating the movement to reject the truce agreement.

Furthermore, there is fear of bloody revenge, of being killed in the streets, since the proposal demands Hamas to completely disarm.

Reports suggest that the commander of Hamas's military wing in Gaza has voiced opposition regarding the proposal, which was announced recently.

The proposal includes a time limit for Hamas to comply or confront significant repercussions.
