For those living nearby, Jihad al-Shamie appeared to live a largely unremarkable life: a recent parent who exercised with dumbbells and parked his car inconsiderately near the residence he lived with his parents.

As the child of a medical specialist, Shamie seemed to have a content early years, with siblings who were younger who went on to have promising professions in technology and medicine development.

But since he was shot dead subsequent to perpetrating a deadly antisemitic attack, a broader perspective has emerged. It has been learned that Shamie was already a bankrupt, found guilty of minor offenses and an accused of sexual assault when he attacked worshippers celebrating the religious holiday.

A Normal Childhood

Jihad al-Shamie reportedly enjoyed a typical early life in Manchester throughout that decade. Through family recordings recorded to send to his grandfather in Syria, he pets a kitten in the family garden, saying to his dad he wants to feed it; elsewhere he pushes his brother on a playground equipment in the yard.

Shamie grew up with brothers born after him, the family enjoying days out to entertainment venue, animal park and the Trafford Centre, and the children participated in school nativity plays during the festive season.

In their previous residence, near the healthcare institution where Shamie’s dad had his occupation, those living nearby mentioned a “ordinary kid” who was part of a “nice family””.

He would interact positively with peers on the neighborhood, and the single odd behavior someone remembered was that he spent most of the day playing on a handheld computer game – so much that it resulted in visual strain.

“The family seemed fine, the dad had employment nearby, he appeared pleasant enough, frequently engaged in conversation. They seemed like decent people, the mother always chatted to us. He used to play on a game, he’d play it all day, he had a noticeable blinking habit.”

‘An Ordinary Lad’

Those residing near his home in Prestwich characterized him as a “uncomplicated, average person” who would frequently work out in his outdoor space, using exercise equipment, with someone noting he frequently positioned his vehicle poorly in front of her home.

The household reportedly relocated to the semi-detached house, roughly two miles distant from the scene of the attack, approximately fifteen years back, when Shamie was nearing twenty years old. During the siblings' childhood, the household resided in the adjacent area.

His father, Faraj al-Shamie, journeyed internationally as a emergency physician, working in conflict zones across the globe, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, and studied under renowned surgeon David Nott in the urban center of Mosul in Iraq.

Family Statement

Faraj al-Shamie has dissociated the household from his child's violent actions, publishing a message through social media that stated: “Reports emerging from Manchester regarding the terrorist attack directed against a Hebrew temple has been a profound shock to us.

“The household members in the UK and abroad strongly condemns this terrible deed, which affected unarmed, ordinary people. We entirely dissociate our family from this assault and express our deep shock and sorrow regarding these events. We extend our sympathy to the injured and their loved ones, and we pray for their strength and comfort.”

Private Situation

Shamie had previously worked as a tutor, teaching English and computer programming. However, he was listed as unemployed in state bankruptcy files which showed he turned to a debt relief order during September of the prior year while staying in the family residence. Just one month later, his dad uploaded an image of him with a recently born child, labeling the image “Great Welcome Grandson”.

Criminal Past

It was revealed that Shamie was on police bail for rape when he steered his modest automobile into worshippers at Heaton Park shul. The exact date is uncertain the reported incident took place but it is understood to have been this year. He was under active investigation by regional authorities.

He had encountered problems earlier, according to sources, who noted his history of offenses for additional minor violations. He was nevertheless not monitored by security services or protection organizations before the incident.

Radicalisation

A solitary message on the inactive social media profile references the bombing of Manbij in Syria in 2016, and calls on God to “stand up against those who wronged and killed them.”
