Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor commented when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would increase Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed intentions to withhold government money from California and warned suspending the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160m from California," he declared, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized trucker that resulted in three deaths and casualties.

His administration noted that the U.S. government had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before indicated he was holding back $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration said in a recent release addressing the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A this month's poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of over 40% to current figures.

Some time ago, Newsom remarked while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The notion that a guy who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
