A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.
We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
