Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on unwanted gifts might be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The eclectic collection is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Italian auction firm. A date has not been finalized, although the intention is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Collection
The presents reportedly locked away in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised if a legal value limit was being respected. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- An assortment including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
